I have a 12 year old Bichon (8.5lb) who has just eaten about 2 cups of Rose Flavoured dark Chocolate Pellets. We just unpacked our suitcase and forget they were there, and she found them, and ate all of them. She has been vomiting ALOT, with chunks of black in it, and is just sitting in the corner shivering. My mom thinks that she will be fine, but I heard that Chocolate for dogs is bad.

Any suggestions?

  2. She needs to vomit ALL of it.

You can give her hydrogen peroxide to get her to vomit it up.

Yes, it is toxic and either way you need to call the emergency vet.  It's not something to fool around with, it most certainly can be lethal.

  3. get this dog to the vets NOW.

  4. you have to get your dog to the vets NOW!! Dark chocolate is very toxic to dogs, and in vast quantities, deadly.  that quantity will be deadly in her case, if you do not get her to the vet immediately!!  Get her to the vet now!! please hurry!  She has to get her stomach pumped or something right away!  don't sit at the computer!  get her to the vet now!!!!!!

  5. call your local emergency vet IMMEDIATELY. Head there NOW. DARK chocolate is VERY toxic. Please hurry. Ill pray for him!

  6. Small dog+Dark chocolate=Big problems.

Please take your dog to the Evet. If it wasnt a small dog & dark chocolate she may be OK, but not dark chocolate and a small dog.

    Hope she is ok!!

  7. If you don't get this dog to an emergency clinic right now, odds are she will die.

Get moving - that's a massive amount of chocolate for a small dog, no way will she be "fine" - your mom is wrong and she'll find out how wrong when the pooch dies.

Get her to a vet --- now.

  8. THAT CAN KILL HER! take her to the vet ASAP they might pump her stomach or something!

  9. Chocolate is bad for dogs, its good she is vomiting cause that means she is getting rid of it out of her stomach. Is she drinking any water ? I would suggest to call a your local vet and ask as her shivering in the corner is obviously not a good sign.

  10. Oh my God!

The dog will die take her to the vet now........

The lethal dosage of theobromine in dogs is between 250 and 500 mgs/kg, or about 2/3 to 1 1/3 of baking chocolate for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. However, serious non-fatal poisonings have been reported in dogs after eating smaller amounts.

At our practice, a 20-pound dachshund showed serious signs of poisoning after eating 3/4 of a pound of milk chocolate and another 22-pound dog died after eating two pounds of baking chocolate.

Deaths due to theobromine have been documented in horses who ate cocoa bean hulls used in bedding and in other livestock fed cocoa waste products. No chocolate poisonings have been reported in cats, which is probably a reflection of their eating habits.

The the first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and nausea. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures.

Dogs definitely have a sweet tooth. Dog-proof for home to keep your dog safe. Milk chocolate should never be given to your pet and it should be kept well out of reach. Unsweetened baking chocolate should be kept in closed containers in upper, latched cupboards.

If your dog eats potentially dangerous amounts of chocolate and you can get the pet to your vet within two hours, vomiting can be induced to remove the poison. If longer than two hours has passed, the animal may need to be seen and treated.

Direct any questions you may have to your veterinarian, regional poison control center, or the National Animal Poison Information Center at The University of Illinois in Urbana which provides computer-supported telephone consultation for potential poisonings.http://www.napcc.aspca.org/ or call the toll free number(888) 252-7387

  11. TAKE HER TO THE VET NOW!

    Good luck.

  12. give her hydrogen peroxide to drink and she should vomit up the rest of what she has eaten.  Follow with water so she doesn't get dehydrated.

  13. This is from the ASPCA website:

    Chocolate

Did you know…chocolate can be harmful or even deadly to pets?

Depending on the form involved, chocolate can contain high amounts of fat and caffeine-like substances known as methylxanthines. If ingested in significant amounts, chocolate can potentially produce clinical effects ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.

Typically, the darker the chocolate, the higher the potential for clinical problems from methylxanthine poisoning. White chocolate has the lowest methylxanthine content, while baking chocolate contains the highest. As little as 20 ounces of milk chocolate, or only two ounces of baking chocolate can cause serious problems in a 10-pound dog. While white chocolate may not have the same potential as darker forms to cause a methylxanthine poisoning, the high fat content of lighter chocolates could still lead to vomiting and diarrhea, as well as the possible development of life-threatening pancreatitis, an inflammatory condition of the pancreas.

  14. J**us S. Chr**t...GET OFF THE COMPUTER AND GET THAT DOG TO THE VET!!!  Your mom is NOT a vet, go to the ER NOW!!!

  15. You need to get her to a vet as soon as possible.

The dark chocolate is very very toxic to a dog.  On average,

Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.

    Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.

    Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:

1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate

1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate

1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

I'd be looking for an emergency vet who is available now and get her there asap.

  16. Take your dog to the vet now! Chocolate is the most poisonous food for dogs and can result in death

  17. I think you need to take the dog to the vet or dig a hole in the backyard and drop the dog in it . If you don't do something soon the dog will be dead.It only takes about two ounces to kill an 80lb German Shepherd

  18. you need to take it to the emergency vet quickly!!!!!!!
