Question:

Small Pets?

I have two dogs and two cats. They are family animals, I really would like my own animal. I used to have a guinea pig but she died. My mom is convinced it was because she was scared of the cats.

But anyway, do you think this is why my guinea died? Is there a small animal that is not bothered by cats? I would really like to be able to hold it like I could hold my guinea, also are hamsters really terrified of cats or do they not care because they are nocturnal?

Thanks! :)

  1. guinea pigs are great animals and your guinea did not die because of cats! hamsters are very scared of cats i had one and he was pretty boring. Ferrets are nasty and smell they remind me of cats they have sharp teeth and are furry. gerbils stay awake during the day but i have never had one? i think you should get another guinea pig but it is up to YOU. i have 2 dogs and 2 cats too and i really want guinea pigs. and if you get a guinea pig you should get two they are social animals

                             Good luck!

  2. It could've died of stress, big predatoruy animals like that can hurt an animals immune system. Don't get small animals if you have cats or dogs. Bad idea

  3. Gerbils don't seem to be terrified of cats.

I have 3 cats and 2 gerbils and let my gerbils run around in a closed off space and my cats just watch them and they don't seem to care.

One of my gerbils even crawled all over the cat!

P.S If you ever get a Gerbil don't attempt that, my cats are declawed and couldn't do much harm with me there.

    Hope this helps ;)

(Also never use newspaper with any small animal)

  4. There is a slight chance that the stress from the cat was too hard on the guinea pig. the small rodent for you are gerbils. they are extemely friendly and bold. Cats do not bother them at all, they actually enjoy watching the cats as much as the cats watch them.  Gerbils do not smell or bite so you can pick them up and play with them as much as you like. Trust me gerbils are the best small pets to buy, just make sure if you do buy some to at least get 2 because they are sooo social.

  5. I doubt your guinea pig died because of the newspaper. I have a gerbil they are very different animals but hes had newspaper bedding for almost a year and seems fine.

I suggest you get a gerbil because i also have a cat and he doesnt seem scared by my cat.

  6. yes i do, becuz it  maybe kept on scartching the cage to get it ur guinea pig  maybe had fainted becuz it was scared. maybe becuz it could of bit the newspaper and had choked on it that was an bad idea. u should of used pet bedding from petco or pet smart. It could of when u where not watching.

  7. Now, everyone is saying their own circumstances, but it IS possible that it WAS the cats. If you had a very skittish and easily frightened guinea pig, it's very possible the cats played a part. How old was your guinea pig when she died? Did she have any symptoms of illness before she died? Did she ever see a vet? It may not have been the cats, but small animals CAN die of stress & fright.

It really depends on the animal you get. Get one as young as possible and introduce it to the cats early on. Are your cats friendly with small animals, or will they attack? Either way, you should let the animal know about the cats and desensitize him to the cats while he's still young. If you keep him away from the cats all the time and suddenly they get in one day, it will result in a lot of stress for a small animal.

But anyway, I just recommend googling. It REALLY does bring up loads of sites about small animals.

http://www.cavyspirit.com is one of the best guinea pig websites out there! :) Good luck!

  8. yes the cat could've killed the guinea pig and so could the news paper

I suggest you get a ferret

  9. I don´t think she died because of the fear of cats. Maybe she just had an illness or maybe she was old.

You should get a hamster only if you don´t let the cats hurt him. He won´t die of the fear, but he may be a bit scared if the cats stare at him all the time (it doesn´t matter that hammies are nocturnal, they will still be scared).

  10. your gp may have died because he couldnt take ur cat staring at her they get so nervous and can have mini heartattacks but that might not be what happened did it just die of old age or there might of been a sickness u didnt know about i hope this helps

  11. Nope...I had a guinea pig, dog (rottweiler/geman shepherd) and 2 cats (tabbys) and everyone got along just fine.

If the cats are frisky then you need to make sure that the area where the small animal will be kept is unaccessable to them and keep the cover on the cage at all times.

  12. Well, I don't think an animal would die because she is scared of something.  if you take care of her, she'll be fine.  If the cat plays with the cage, the animal might get scared.  Just get any animal you want and keep the cage where the cat can't get it and make sure to take good care of it.  Hamsters are scared of cats, or at least black bear hamsters are, because i had one and i had 2 cats and the hamster was always hiding in a tube on the side of his cage, but it was connected, lol.

    Hope this helps,

    Love, Wild Tiger :)
