Anyone know of a small town that is a good place to live that has a commute of less than an hour to a big city? When I get out of college, I want to live in the country, but I also really want to get a high-paying job, which are mainly in cities. It can be anywhere in the USA.

  1. There are LOTs of places around Atlanta, Georgia. If you don't mind the heat and humidity in the summer, Atlanta's a great place to live AND work.

  2. Tons of places like that in Minnesota - lots of farm houses that are within a half hour to 45 minutes of the Twin Cities.  It's the best of both worlds!  So, if you think you can stand the weather, give it a shot!

  3. The Bay Area is the place to be.Work in San Francisco and commute on Bart transit. Check it out.

  4. Even tho I wouldn't say Madison, WI is a "big city" (it's about 250,000 population) it's surrounding area may meet your needs.  There are some gorgeous rolling hills southwest of the city toward some small towns like Mt. Horeb, Evansville, Oregon that would put you at a 20-40 min. drive to the city.

There are a ton of great little farm houses for sale/rent all around the surrounding areas of the city that would give you exactly what you wanted.

The twin cities (St. Paul/Minneapolis) would be worth looking into as well, but the commute would be longer and MUCH more hectic with traffic.

I hope you find what you are looking for!

  5. Give a lot of thought to working in a city.  There is more money true, but the price you have to pay for that is too great- stress tension, traffic congestion, smog, crowding, greed, crime, and your safety.  The benefits of small town living with a modest income far outweigh the horrors of city life.
