I put 4 litres of petrol in diesel (1.9 peugeot partner 2006 model) before realising mistake. i topped up with 45 litres of diesel. The tank was pretty empty. Will i do damage to the engine. Its just an ordinary diesel, not hdi or common rail high pressure injection. I find conflicting advice from disater, get it drained and flushed to people saying they do it to clean the injectors. Whats the safe amount and ratio that i will get away with without having to go to the expensive of draining it. I'v already driven it about 5 miles and its not acting up ???

  1. Then don't worry about it

  2. i run semi's 4 a living and anyone who tells u petrol is use 2 clean a diesel is full of b-s...never do that...but 4liters wont hurt ur car if u filled up on diesel with the rest...it may run a lil rough but u need 2 keep ur tank full 4 awhile 2 lean out the mixture u have in it now...but do grab a diesel conditioner and add the rite amount 2 help lean it out and give u some protection...diesel additives is the only thing u should put in ur tank 2 clean ur engine...

  3. Loretta,

The 4 litres of petrol that you've mistakenly loaded will minimally dilute the diesel fuel in the tank. This means that the lubricating properties of the diesel fuel will be lessened but not to a dangerous extent. You've driven the vehicle for 5 miles already and you didn't hear a knocking sound on the engine? Hence, you're quite safe. But don't try the other suggestion with regards to cleaning injectors by adding petrol on a diesel fed vehicle. To my experience, kerosene is safer to add. Next time you use the vehicle, put some more diesel fuel in it as a precaution. Don't worry, its only 4 litres of petrol to 45 litres of diesel.

  4. I've heard of people adding small amounts of gasoline to diesel tanks to improve performance so I wouldn't worry about it. Just to play it safe though, when you get down to half a tank go ahead and refill it with diesel again to throughly dilute any gas that's left in there. You could even add some diesel injector cleaner now, that would assure you that your injectors will have the proper lubrication while you run through this tank of fuel.

  5. drive it... really if it was going to do something  you would have notice it pretty much after you started it and drove it..... it would have been knocking more ...run it easy for a few days and refill your ok
