Question:

Small apt...where should we put our cat's litterbox??

My boyfriend and I took in a stray cat. We live in a small one bedroom apt (570 sq ft) with an open living/dining area, kitchen and one small bathroom with two doors-one from the hall, one from the bedroom. We don't have a lot of money and may not be able to buy any pricey "litterbox furniture". What is a good place to put the litterbox? Also any tips on keeping the smell down would be appreciated!

  1. well anywhere that sint in the ay, in a private area for the cat.

also i wud get one with a top, or get some litter smelling stuff u put in the tray and clean it often liek once a week fully but every day clean out poo and wee will keep it smelling nice.

  2. I have the same problem. In my bathroom there is a long narrow space that I can use. I ended using a cardboard box with a plastic liner on the box bottom and newspapers under the box. In a small space you really need the scented and scoopable stuff or else you end up smelling like the litterbox (mainly because bathroom are moist). My only other choice was under the kitchen table which grossed me out!

  3. I rescue and foster cats, currently have 11 and 5 litter boxes, but you'd never know they were there, because they are hidden in plain sight:

    1) I've removed the bottom shelf of an IKEA bookshelf and tucked the litter box under it.  Then I put hooks along the front and a piece of material to cover the box (and give them some privacy)

    2) My desk has a lower section for a hard drive.  I've removed the door, put a litterbox there and have my harddrive on top of my desk.

    3)  An end table has been moved to a corner, with a small armchair beside it.  There is a litterbox under the table and the armchair hides it from public view.

    4) Though I swore never to have one in the bedroom, I have one rescue who is terrified of the other cats and refuses to leave the room.  So I have a covered litterbox snuggled between two cat carriers.

    5) The last one is in the bathroom under the vanity, hidden behind one door.

With all these cats, I can tell you that it is imperative that the smell be kept down, especially living across from the building superintendent!  So, I make sure that I scoop at least twice a day (before I leave for work and when I get home) as well as before I go to bed.  I can't handle perfumes so get the unscented litter, and ensure that the boxes are always full.  I also wash them out (in rotation) with hot water and soap before putting new litter in the boxes.

If I can do this, you certainly can!  Wishing you all the best!

  4. I live in a small 1 BR condo tho fortunately have a larger bathroom so my litter box is in there. I bought one of the covered Booda Domes and scoopable litter. I find that I scoop out the poops everyday since they seem to stick up the most and the clumps of pee every other day. Make sure you keep the litter level kinda full so your cat digs in a bit but doesn't scratch to the bottom where it will stick when it's wet. This just makes it easier to scoop out! Then I wash it out with soap and water once a month when I do my cleaning around the house. I also use a small carpet under the box that sticks out from the front to keep the tracking of litter down. This seems to work for me and my kitty!

  5. I have mine in the bathroom. And I live in an old (built in 1908) apartment so the bathroom is TINY. So I bought a tupperware storage box that is just big enough for my cat but narrow enough to wedge between my toilet and tub. CAREFULLY using an exacto knife I cut a swingy flap door on the front. (I perforated the plastic along the top of the door so it swings easy for kitty and decorated with permanent markers!)

    Here's pics!

The litter doesn't get wet cause the door isn't too low and the rest is enclosed. I use arm and hammer unscented super scoop and I NEVER smell the cat poo. (making sure your cat gets LOTS water makes their pee smell less. I got a kitty water fountain and she LOVES it. watch for sells!)

    GOOD LUCK!

and way to go for taking in the poor little homeless kitty!

  7. Mine's in the bathroom.

Just make sure you clean it out every day, or when you see it needs to be changed.

  8. Bathroom. If the litter is very wet then change it completely every day but if its only a bit dirty then just scoop off the dirty litter. You must do this every day to keep it fresh. Buy litter that had a deodarant in to keep the smelll at bay. Well done for giving this poor Kitty a home..

  9. Keeping the smell down is easy... just clean the box daily / or 2x a day.

While the cat is pooping is when I get the MOST awful smells coming from it.

Can you put the box below the sink in the bathroom (possibly taking out a drawer or cabinet ... leaving the door open for access...or somewhere else in the bathroom.

they have boxes that are fancy that look like end tables that you cut a hole in and then put the kitty box inside ... this would work but in an apt that small it would smell up the living room /// so yuk...

ANOTHER SUGGESTION is why not try and teach the cat to use the toilet?  they have kits for that at pet smart and online...

This would be the cleanest/ easiests after the cat is trained.  You will have to deal with it until then ... You put a liner under the seat  and it first has sand in it then you remove the sand and the cat uses the tray... then you take away the tray.

Now you have to be careful if it is a kitten but I had a neighbor cat that adopted me and he used the toilet all the time... so I know it works. (don't teach it to flush though or your water bill will be sky high!

    good luck

For me there is no room in the bathroom so I keep mine in the hall.  You said you can't afford fancy litter boxes but it's worht it to get one with a cover and they do go on sale.  You will need to scoop it all the time.

You said you don't have a lot of money but your cat will need to get fixed.  If you go to the MSPCA website there is an organization call SNAP and they send you a voucher for 1/2 off vet bill for spay or nuter.

  11. We keep ours in the bathroom although that may have to change since we're moving and the layout of the new bathroom isn't that great. We're considering taking tone of the cabinet doors off in the kitchen and putting the litter there. Try a few different litters and see which works best for you and your cat. This is our second cat. Our first cat's urine smelled horribly, we don't have this issue with our second cat, so it's all about the cat's chemistry and the right litter.

  12. When we lived in an apart. we kept it in the bathrooms then you can keep those odors in the bathroom where they belong. Enjoy , cats make great pals.
