Small betta companion?

I was wondering if there was some sort of animal that I could but in with my betta? Like a hermit crab or snail of some sort. I don't really care if they interact a lot. And I only have a 2 gallon tank.

  1. Yes.

I currently house mine with mystery snails and ghost shrimps.  They do a great job of helping to keep the tank clean and are not very big.  I wouldn't keep anything else with it though in that size tank.  If you upgrade to a tank over 5 gallons you can start looking at maybe some cories or danios.

Go with either a snail or shrimp but not both unless you get a bigger tank.

Don't get apple snails, they grow to about the size of baseballs and would need a much bigger tank than 2 gallons.

  2. not a goldfish

    1. they are coldwater and bettas are tropical

    2. they will fight

    3. goldfish need between 20-50 gallons

    maby an apple snail

  3. A mystery snail will work. 1 of my bettas have a mystery snail in there tank. There is no freshwater hermit crab, so there is no way to do that!=)

  4. Yeah a snail is good..

  5. you can put any other fish with a beta except another beta. gold fish are supposed to be good for companionship for the little fellows. and i have also heard but dont know that oposite s*x betas should be compatible but really i dont know.

  6. you don't even have enough space for the betta, much less anything else.

why would anyone want a tank that small?  If you don't have two square foot of space for a 10 gallon tank, why would you think you have the reasources to care for a fish in the first place?

please stop thinking of fish as a decoration.

  7. You could try a snail, but make sure it isn't small enough for the betta to eat, or he might try to eat it. I wouldn't recommend putting any other fish in it because the betta will probably get territorial and aggressive in that small of a space.

  8. Malaysian trumpet snails are great or if you want fish you need to remember these nine rules

1- nothing with long or flowing fins

2- nothing aggressive and no fin-nipper species

    3- nothing colorful

4- nothing larger than the betta

5- nothing small enough for the betta to swallow in three or less bites

6- must have similar tank needs as betta (temperature, low current filtration)

    7- since Betta's are top-dwellers you may want to get a bottom-dweller

8- be prepared to put plastic or real plants in the tank for the fish to hide in and claim as their territory (Betta's need space separate from tank mates, a plant is a good way to give your betta his own territory)

9- do not overcrowd the tank!

    Hope that helps
