Small company employee recruitment?

I want a new job but i'm fed up with the big recruitment agencies. I want to find a job with a small start-up company but have no idea where such a company would advertise positions. Any ideas?

Word of mouth is the best way to find an unadvertised job, but almost as hard to come by... Check the local papers and the local chamber of commerce to see if they know of any new outfits just enrolling.  This may help you keeping it local.
