  1. hi plant bamboo- its gets nice and tall- it spreads so if  you idont want this to happen then i suggest you  plant it in huge pots-  its evergreen too which is a bonus. i hate conifers ...

  2. If you use Bamboo species, ensure that they are 'clump forming'.

There are 'skyrocket' conifers that stay very slim and are an excellent foil in a small garden, not to be tarred with the same brush as leylandii or lawsoniana.

In fact, all columnar plants will suit depending on your soil type.

Or trellis and climbers do a great job, so long as it faces south or someone else will get all the flowers!

  3. I agree with Maz, bamboo looks gorgeous and sounds even better. Be careful what you buy though, steer clear of any of the Phyllostachys species as they spread quickly unless contained. Similarly Sasa palmatum and Pseudosasa japonica. Go for any of the Fargesia they have a lovely arching habit or, if you want tall and straight try Semiarundinaria fastuosa which is very tall and has beautiful blotchy culms. Try this nursery for good advice and plants http://www.panglobalplants.com/

A good website and plenty of choice.
