I'm from the US and recently went to Europe, was wondering how I could find a nice small, cheap, European style(aka stylish) hatchback since I know almost nothing about cars. I'm looking for

-less than or near $20k

-fuel-efficient

-small (European-size small preferably)

-sold in US

-um.. cute looking? Sorry.. I'm 18.. haha

I can think of the Toyota Yaris but not much else. Appreciate the help!!!

  1. saturn astra it is sold as the opel astra in europe and looks much better than the yaris.

  2. Honda Fit

  3. I'm not quite sure what you mean by European-style, but these are all hatchbacks and consumer reports' tested overall mpg:

    Mazda3 - 25

    VW Rabbit/Golf - 24

    Honda Fit - 32

    Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe (virtually identical) - 27

    Scion xD - 29

    Nissan Versa - 28

    Toyota Yaris - 34

    Saturn Astra - 25

    Suzuki SX4 - 22

    Subaru Impreza Outback- 23

Smart ForTwo (not 100% sure on the mileage as CR didn't test it, but its a tiny hatchback that's been popular in Europe for several years now)

You'll have to look at and test the ones you think are cute and also small enough, but all of these are in the top half of Consumer Reports' hatchbacks list for 2008 (except the ForTwo; again, it was untested by CR).  This should be a really good list to start with, and you should be able to find all of them, new, for $20,000 or less.

A friend of mine just bought a Honda Fit, and she loves it.  Excellent mileage, and very affordable.  I'm personally a fan of the Mazda3, but it's a tradeoff between mileage and looks/performance.  Good luck with the search!
