Question:

Small problem with backhand?

Ok So my backhand has lots of pace and good depth, but what I noticed was that there was no topspin coming from it. Instead, the ball was producing a slight amount of underspin. My coach was telling me not to use wrist while generating topspin but instead bring my elbow up like im covering my mouth with it. Is that all I need to do? What else should I do?

  1. in order to acheive topspin, you must brush up the back of the ball and "flick" your wrist. U must also have a complete follow through which will help your backhand.

  2. I think your coach was mainly trying to keep you from dropping your elbow on the shot.  In general, you want to use your off hand to bring your racquet back (rotate your hips, and shoulders, bend your knees, and change to your backhand grip at the same time..) your elbow should be above the level of your wrist, ensuring your racquet head starts low.  As your start your stroke,  uncoil your hips, rotate your shoulders into the shot, and swing your racquet from low...to high, keeping your wrist "locked" all the way through impact.  The topspin is imparted from the combination of your knee bend, your hip/shoulder turn, and the path of the racquet head (low to high) Hope this helps

  3. when you hit the tennis ball. have the racket moving upwards causing front spin making it want to come down more.

  4. add some swing

  5. i think to achieve topspin backhand, you need to turn your shoulder to bring your racquet to the back. use backhand grip or continental grip. try to align the incoming ball with your hitting shoulder. your hitting shoulder should be lower than the other. bend your knees and swing forward by opening your hitting arm first. your hitting arm should be relaxed while swinging forward, and slightly bent at the elbow. swing low to high, remember to keep your back foot bend but stay on the ground. this helps because when you brush the ball upward, you need to keep your body in balance. as you swing forward, open your shoulder slowly. at impact, brush the ball upward. always aim a bit more above the net (say 2-3 ft above net) than your usual backhand stroke. follow through with the racquet lifted shoulder high, arm stretched, and shoulder opened out facing the net.

this will work either you use open stance or closed stance. when returning heavy serve with backhand topspin, use open stance.

oh and for the elbow covering the mouth, i think your coach is thinking about preparing a backhand slice instead. do your own thing.

and your underspin is caused by late response to the fast ball coming right at you (you should be stepping aside). seems like you hit with backhand but it come up short slicing from left to right (if you're a righty). it's a bit side-spin as well, notice the ball flies in a slight curve from your right to left, after bounce it flies back to your right.

    hope it helps :)

  6. as you hit the ball raise your raquet up
