Question:

Small refrigerators in England?

Here's a question for people in Great Britain from an American....I've been watching a TV show called "It's Me or the Dog" that is filmed in England, and I couldn't help notice that many of the homes shown in this show have really teeny refrigerators. Is this the norm in English/British homes? Some were as small as what we call "dorm" fridges here in the US, and would barely hold enough food for one person for more than a few days, not to mention the almost absent freezer space.

  1. Generally, our fridges are either single or combined with a freezer. Either way, they're about the same size (about 85cm high).

We don't generally have the American style fridges- ie the double doored ones with an ice compartment. Some people might, but as a general, most people have a smallish fridge.

It stores all we need- why would you want your fridge to make ice cubes for you?!

At some times, my house holds 6 people (or 10 at Christmas) yet we have no qualms with the size of our fridge. As long as there's enough space for the wine...

  2. my fridge is great im from the uk it looks like a small coupard but it pops out and its a fridge wen i saw it for the first time i was like wow thts kl but yh we have very small fridges

  3. I haven't seen the show you're talking about, but do the fridges look like one of the mini fridges on this page ...

because if so they are sold mainly for keeping drinks in ... they seem to be quite fashionable at the moment ... for instance it's something you might have in your bedroom to keep a couple of cans of drinks in so that you don't have to go to the kitchen when you're thirsty ... or something you have in the lounge so that you can watch the football on the TV and have your cold drinks to hand

the one I have is also dual-voltage and plugs into the car cigar lighter so we can take it with us on picnics

in the kitchen people would almost certainly have a large fridge-freezer with all the food, etc, in it

  4. Yeah, fridges in the UK (well, in Europe in general actually) are usually smaller than in the States. We have no problem storing everything we need though.

Stores like Costco don't exist here where you buy food for a year in one go. =)

Plus, in Europe you don't need a car to go everywhere so people tend to shop less and more frequent than they do in the States.

I lived in the States for years and I found that people throw away so much food there. Obviously, this may only be the case with the people I knew there and not the entire population in general

  5. Whenever I have visitors from Uk they always say "wow what a huge fridge".  My family are all over there in UK, and yes their fridges are definitely smaller... mostly just about the same height as our "wine fridges" would be.

  6. maybe cause most of us can't afford giant fridge freezers like american ones, i know i can't

i have 2 freezers an 1 fridge, also the family might have had another freezer of fridge in a basement or something

    (i love the show)
