Small surf keep Volcom Fiji Pro from resuming Round 2 at Cloudbreak on Tuesday – Surfing News
A lay day was called at Volcom Fiji Pro due to unfavourable surfing conditions prevailing at Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Tuesday, June 5.
The first two days of the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals had gone down in barrelling conditions, offering a heavy dose of thrilling action as the fate of the first round and ten heats of Round 2 were revealed.
However, conditions began to deteriorate on Monday afternoon, with the surfers having a tough time hunting for a couple of decent scores in inconsistent waves.
There was no significant improvement in the conditions on Tuesday, which compelled the event organisers to keep the second round on hold with the intended motivation of resuming the action once the conditions became more promising.
“As projected, there’s not a lot on offer this morning and we’ve called competition off for the day,” conceded Matt Wilson, the Event Director for Volcom Fiji Pro. “Swell models still look very promising for Friday and Saturday and we’ll be back tomorrow
morning to further assess the situation.”
According to Surfing, the official forecasters for the latest ASP World Tour event, a massive swell will be arriving at the open ocean reef pass of Cloudbreak on Friday, presenting the event organisers with ideal conditions to continue the action.
The first two days of the competition delivered plenty of adrenaline-pumping action and featured handful of surprises on its first two days. The 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater from America was back after recovering from an ankle injury that had
caused him to miss the Brazilian stop of the elite tour, only to find himself tasting defeat in the very first round of Volcom Fiji Pro. However, he managed to bounce back strongly through a solid Round 2 performance on Monday.
Other surfing heavy-weights such as Taj Burrow and Josh Kerr also rebounded from a Round 1 defeat, consequently keeping their chances of clinching the event title alive. Brazil’s Gabriel Medina’s 10-point ride remained one of the biggest highlights of Round
2 as the young sensation prevailed over Australia’s Yadin Nicol to confirm his place in the third round.
The event organisers will reconvene at Cloudbreak on Wednesday to assess the conditions and give the call for a possible 8:30 am start.
