Smart Bid to go 2 in 2 for the new campaign in the Muniz Memorial Handicap
Augustin Stable’s owned 6-year-old horse, Smart Bid, has so far bagged 2 graded stakes races, and his precious wins have come over the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots turf course, where he will be out again 1 April, 2012, and look to defend his title in
one of the two wins he had at this venue.
Graham Motion trained Smart Bid has a good chance of defending his title Grade 2, 400,000 Muniz Memorial Handicap at about 1 1/8 miles on turf on 1 April, 2012, a race that has reeled in 11, 4-year-old and up horses, because the older horse is coming off
a fantastic victory in his seasonal debut.
The Pennsylvania bred son of Smart Strike, out of mare Recording by Danzig, Smart Bid won the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap, over a distance of 1 1/8 mile on the venue’s turf course on 25 February, 2012.
Mr. Vegas was looking like a likely winner in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap, when he made his bid in the stretch and looked ominous as he pulled away from the rest, but Smart Bid wasn’t done as yet, as he made a strong move under jockey E. Prado and
out run the Mr. Vegas and snapped his three race win streak.
Under Miguel Mena, the 5-year-old Freud horse, Mr. Vegas had won the Grade 3 Colonel E. R. Bradley Handicap on turf. The New York bred horse will try to take his revenge in the Muniz Memorial Handicap, as he will be vying for his eighth win in 23 career
starts, as Miguel Mena will retain the ride for trainer Richard Scherer.
On the other hand, Smart Bid will retain his ride, E. Prado for the Muniz Memorial Handicap, and the pair will break from post number 4 for trainer Graham Motion.
The Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Handicap winner, the son of Strong Hope, Papaw Bodie will be competing in the Muniz Memorial Handicap for trainer Michael Maker, and he will break from post 11 under jockey R. Napravnik.
The race will be an interesting one, as Smart Bid will have his work cut out, but after his last performance, his chances are looking bright to take this race as well.
