My aged mother is convinced that she needs a smart attenna to enhance her reception with the new digatal to analog box reqired to get broadcast tv next year. I have exhusted my searches and ask, will a simple indoor smart attenna give her better reception in the foothills with nearest broadcats about 60 mlles away? Her reception stinksat times and her limited income and dememtia has her ready to spend $200 on something she may not need. Electronics has never been my field of study and I am confused. Thank you for your help. :)

  1. Roof top antenna with a adjustable signal amplifier would work the best. UHF signal travel line of sight Get the converter box and see how good the reception is. There are a few more channels to view on PBS

  2. Don't go looking for a SMART antenna....she probably saw something on Tv about a plug in antenna...

You will most likely need a ROOF TOP antenna for a Tv that's 60 miles from the transmitter....

Now...if you live in Europe, this won't help you, but you can get an idea of what the antenna looks like, and you can consult an aerial engineer for the proper aerial <<WITH some Knowledge>>

    http://www.antennaweb.org

Will show various antennas and distances they work in...

Just type in any city with 110 Main St and another nearby city will give you some 60 mile distances...

Good places to start, Philadelphia Pa is close to NYC...

Gary In is close to Chicago...

In your case, you may want to Google "aerial" with "placement" , "direction" et al.....

If you're in the US..just use the link....

THEN Look at "Channel Master" or "Winegard" Websites....

And yes, while there is some present engineering work going on with "smart antennas" I don't expect it to be available until 2012 or later....
