how come in high school its "cool" to be a jock or be dumb but ur a nerd if u play chess or make all a's or like to read or are just different from the "followers"

Because immature people tend to ridicule what they don't understand, what is different from them, or what intemidates them.

Smart people, in some respects, are all of the above.  

In addition, we are force fed the sterotypes you identified from the mass media.  This promotes us to group people in society, and subset of society, such as high school.

These people are jocks, these people are nerds, these people are preps, these people are heads, these people are ...........
