Smash Cake did not turn out right?

A friend of a friend sent me a recipe for smash cake but when i made it it did not look the same Question do you follow the directions on the yellow cake box and then follow the smash cake recipe or mix ingredients as directed anId skip directions on the cake box???

  1. You just pour the cake mix in, do NOT follow directions on cake box.
