Smashing win for Mexico in the first match of NORCECA Olympic Qualifiers – Volleyball news
Mexican men’s national volleyball squad exhibited a stellar feat in the opening match of 2012 NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament, which kicked off on Monday at Walter Pyramid, Long Beach, California.
Mexico launched full power on Costa Rica and posted 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) victory over opponents. Mexican top guns dominated from start to end and did not allow Costa Rica to come up. The plan and strategy of head coach JORGE MIGUEL AZAIR L perfectly
worked out and his team managed to take a winning start in the campaign.
Mexico’s Daniel Vargas emerged as the top scorer in the match. He added match-high 16 points on 39 attack attempts. On the other hand, Richard Smith Hall of Costa Rica put up good effort for his team and contributed team-high seven points.
Costa Rica failed to match its performance with Mexico and suffered the loss of opening set in only 20 minutes. Mexico improved to 1-0 and further extended its lead by capturing the next set. Mexico continued with success and finished the match by securing
third set in row.
Captain of Mexican team Carlos Guerra said, “Congratulations to Costa Rica on a great match. I think we did well considering (Gerardo) Contreras was not on the floor (due to illness). We just found out about that this morning. It was our first match we just
had to stay patient and get confident and not look ahead to Wednesday. We just need to play our game.”
“It is a high-level tournament,” Costa Rica Coach Cesar Salas said. “I know Mexico’s style. I think what affected us is we have never played at this high level of tournament. The first match is the hardest. We need to continue to perform better. We had problems
with Mexico’s serve.”
At the end of day-1 of 2012 NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament host United States and Mexico bagged victories in Pool A. The Pool-Play of the tournament will span over three days and it will complete its run on Wednesday, May 9.
The second and third place finishers from Pool A and Pool B will meet in the quarter-finals, while the pool-toppers will move straight into the semi-finals. The quarter-final matches are scheduled to take place on Thursday, which will promote two teams to
advance to the semi-finals. Furthermore, two top teams of the competition will meet in the final showdown on Saturday. Other classification matches for 3-5 positions will also be held on the final day of the tournament.
There is only one Olympic Ticket on stake and eight teams are competing for it. Let’s wait and see until the tournament reaches its end and announces one lucky team to go to London, in order to attend the 2012 Summer Olympics Games.
