  1. It's normal for your tank to smell, its just the Bactria in your tank.

  2. it think u should buy a water filter and change the water frequently.but u did not mention how many fish u have in the tank.

  3. Maybe try changing 10-20% of water every day until the smell clears up.  Make sure you do all your tests, ammonia can smell but I haven't smelt it in an aquarium so I don't know whether it is a pong or not.

    Hope it helps :)

  4. how often do you clean your tank? a filtered tank should be cleaned weekly by taking 10 percent of the old water with a gravel vacume(they take out the fish poo and other gross stuff but leave the clear surface water) and the filter cleaned once a month by using old tank water to wash the media.

an unfiltered tank should be cleaned 20 percent twice weekly using a gravcel vacume, you should always add dechlorinated water as well. adding untreated tap water makes the fish sick and makes them excrete more making the fish tank dirtier and smellier as well as eventually killing the fish.  just because your tank looks "clear" it doesnt mean it is "clean".

definetly do a full water test (aquariums do them for ten dollars if you take in a sample of water) and check the ammonia, ph and nitrates particularly. unhealthy fish in general will smell.

also if you have goldfish they naturally are much messier fish than most tropical or marine, so you would have to clean your tank even more often, but never more than 50 percent of the water at a time so as to preserve the good bacteria.

if you know all this already then sorry for going on!!

check the ingredients in your fish food, once i got a cheap one from the supermarket and it said things like "pork fat, chicken, wheat starch..." it made my tank stink! fish shouldn't eat that kind of stuff, your food should say things like fish meat, fish egg, algae, cuttlefish, shrimp meal, soybean meal etc.

you could also try planting your tank so that you can feed your fish less, poo made from plants smells a lot less than poo made from processed fish food as well as being better for the fish.

if your tank is cleaned regularly and properly and your fish are eating the right food there is absolutely no reason why your tank should smell. good luck! i hope this helped!!

  5. You could try carbon, this got the fishy smell away fro me, so much so that i now have a smell free tank in my bedroom :)

It goes in the filter, and you may have to get special inserts.

  6. get carbon my tank use to smell bad too but I put in carbon in the filter and it all went away.

  7. First of all check your water. Just because you water is clear doesn't mean there couldn't be an ammonia spike. Second, cut feeding in half so if you feed twice a day now only feed once. If you feed only once a day now only feed every other day. The small could be due to rotting food in the bottom of the tank. Third, if this doesn't work due the daily 10% water changes until the smell starts to go away. However it is important to note that no tank will ever be completely smell free, and chemicals that say they will remove smell should never be added to a tank because they could mess everything up!
