Smiling Fish International Series: Florah Sew Fong Ng prevails in Women’s Singles final
Women’s Singles event of Smiling Fish International Series was dominated by Malaysia as its talented shuttler, Florah Sew Fong Ng bagged the crown by overcoming Alisa Sapniti in Thailand on May 6, 2012.
The final match prolonged to three exhausting sets and both contenders consumed their energies for 47 minutes to place final results of 11-21, 21-15 and 21-19.
Sew Fong Ng, who was top seeded player in this event, came back from a horrendous start and reserved her right to be at top of victory stand by performing exceptionally well in last two games.
Meanwhile, the Thai girl disappointed her supporters by frittering away an early advantage of first set win and got pale in front of higher ranked opponent.
Alisa Sapniti took a great start in the opening game as she gained an immediate lead by playing really fast badminton. She outclassed her challenger with some powerful smashes and deceiving drop net shots.
First half of the set ended with Alisa standing at a decent total of 11 points. She maintained the same momentum after the interval also and established an unassailable lead.
The Malaysian lady could not narrow the gap of ten points and lost first set with scoreboard flashing final figure of 11-21.
However, Sew Fong Ng turned the tables in very next game. She dazzled the local shuttler with a lustrous performance and successfully avoided a straight-set defeat.
In the beginning, both competitors remained toe-to-toe but couple of mistakes broke Alisa’s back and she could not rise in later part of the game.
Meanwhile, Sew Fong Ng did not miss the opportunity and made the difference with some consecutive points. She equalled the match score with a notable margin of 21-15.
The decider turned into survival of the fittest war with this development. Both players sweat hard to clinch the final set of the match.
Key to success was patience as both finalists were locked in a nerve-locking tussle until game point situation. However, the Malaysian campaigner proved herself mentally and physically stronger than the native shuttler.
Sew Fong Ng raised her hands as Champion after putting a concluding total of 21-19 on the board.
