Smith annoyed with questions over OC Mike Martz future - NFL News
Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith is not in a good mood these days. The Bears Coach has seen his side throw away their playoffs wildcard round because of a five game losing streak and an injury to regular quarterback Jay Cutler.
Smith finally snapped in his press conference yesterday when asked about the status of offensive coordinator Mike Martz future with the Bears.
"What kind of question is that anyway?" Smith said. "At this time, what kind of question is that? Why would you ask a question like that anyway?"
Martz who joined the Bears in 2010 has been rumoured to be thinking of leaving the franchise with offers coming in from various colleges to take on the head coach role. However, Coach Lovie Smith when asked about Martz’s future earlier in the season called
the stories “made up”.
The offensive coordinator also sought to dispel the rumours about his potential departure saying
"I've addressed that already, and obviously, I'd sure like to be back. This is going to be a great football team and I'd like to be part of it. I like it here. Hopefully it works out, and I think it will."
Martz is in the final year of his contract with the Chicago Bears and has various offers from colleges for the head coaching role.
The 2011 season was not the best for Martz and Coach Lovie Smith. The Bears offense this year was 20th overall in the National Football League and that stat could have been even higher if not for the injury to quarterback Jay Cutler.
Cutler broke his thumb during the week 11 game against San Diego Chargers. The injury was the single most crucial moment in the Bears season. Chicago replaced Cutler with Caleb Hanie who failed miserably in trying to lead the Bears offense resulting in four
straight defeats that jeopardised Bears hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Wildcard Playoffs round.
Hanie threw nine interceptions in his four games, the quarterback created just three passing touchdowns as the Bears failed to carry their early season momentum into the business end.
The Bears replaced Hanie with veteran Josh McCown in last week’s match against Green Bay Packers. McCown performed better but his efforts were not enough to lead the Bears to a win that may have saved their season.
With nothing left to play for in the season the Bears will face Minnesota Vikings in a final week dead rubber on Sunday.
