Smog Test California?

Question

I recently bought a 2000 BMW 323CI, after buying the car in a couple of days check light turned on and i could not pass smog test in California.I changed my gas cap and reset the light off but the second time my car failed to pass the test.

Can anybody tell me please, if the engine check light is turned off how can the smog test result can be malfunction indicator light?

What made you think the gas cap was bad?  Stop guessing and get the code scanned (free) at autozone.  Find the REAL reason why the check engine light is on.

It could probably be that an oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe is bad.

Also check if there is any major leaks in the exhaust.

They should of given you a printed report of why it isn't passing smog.  

If these aren't the problems, then do like the other guy said, and take it in and have it tested.
