Smog question?

The preveious owner tolde me that they had done the smog check.....well today i went to dmv to get the car register and the lady tolde me i need to get my car smog check...is there anything i can do....it was my moms friend who sold it to me...but my question is can i go up to her and tell her to get it check or do i have to pay for the smog thing....dont know what to do
