Question:

Smogging my car?

My car has been at a shop now for over two weeks, while they try to smog it so I can get this initial registration finished finally.

They told me that it will cost an additional 1100.00, for two Cat/Convertors, and a distributor, that brings the bill to over 1600.00,....for a smog cert so they'll give me my tags????

That's a rip off to drive a car that only cost me 2000.00 in the first place. Why should I have to fork over 2000.00 grand to smog a car that's not listed over 2000.00 in the blue book?

Does anyone know of any state assistance for excessive fees incurred for smogging a vehicle (other than the DMV who won't help)?

  1. Please explain how you "smog a car".  do you spray smog on it ?  Do you dip it in a smog tank ?  Where do you get the smog?

  2. It depends on what state you're in. Here in California, if you've had the car for at least two years, you will qualify for state assistance. Just ask your mechanic about it. If you just recently bought the car, you should've done your homework before purchasing. I don't know about other states, but under California law, it's the seller's responsibility to get a smog certificate for a vehicle and make necessary repairs to the vehicle before it's sold to a new buyer. Here's proof of what I'm telling you directly from the DMV website.
