Question:

Smoke alarm beeping in the vacant apartment above?

When I arrived home from buying some dinner this evening, I noticed a constant beeping from the apartment above (where no one is living). I called the emergency maintenance, because I could see no smoke(or smell it). The person said someone would be by. It's now almost 2 am and it's still beeping (since 8 pm).

What could be wrong with the alarm? And why isn't anyone checking on it?

  1. Probably low battery. But could be an electrical fire causing smouldering that you can not not detect untill it is too late.

    Call Fire Brigade.

  2. The battery is running low, and until someone stops by to change it.

It will keep on beeping ( d**n things came beep for months).

The house next to me is empty, and since Nov 07 the smoke alarm has been beeping. I only hear it when i'm out side......

  3. Odds are the battery is low and it's indicating this by beeping.  Regardless, they should have been there long ago and someone should have contacted you back with a response to it.  I would raise some h**l with the landlord.

  4. Most of the time vacant apartments are left unlock ,if so bring a broom and kill that dam thing

  5. Mine usually beeps when the battery runs down low.

  6. It depends on what kind it is, if its battery operated and the battery is dying it should only beep periodically like every 30 seconds or so. If its run by electricity more than likely its a faulty detector if your building hasnt burned down by now.  Your emergency maintenence is probably in violation of local fire codes if they dont come and fix it. I would report it to the local fire departement or fire marshall. It sounds like a very unsafe practice not to check on it and they could be fined.
