I have scotts turf builder

I know that the formula for a good smoke bomb is 6parts pottasium nirtate(kno3, saltpeter) and 4 parts sugar. I was wondering if scotts turf builder would work as the pottasium nitrate

  1. I don't think so.

Fertilizers have an "NPK" rating based on percentage by weight. Most fertilizers run between 2 to 20 % nitrogen. The nitrogen itself is either nitrate (NO3) or ammonium (NH4) nitrogen. It is going to be the nitrate which will be the oxidizer in the smoke bomb. Assuming an average of 15%, this means each ounce of Scotts will be 85% inert material. The percentage of nitrate is going to be too diluted for the smoke bomb to ignite. Pure saltpeter (KNO3) is an ingredient in black powder and I believe it can be purchased in a shop which sells guns. Black powder (gunpowder) is an equal mix of Saltpeter, Sulfur and Carbon. Another powerful oxidant is a flux that welders use, and is based on potassium hypochlorite. However, this material might be too reactive and your smoke bomb may become an actual bomb. My advice is to study the chemistry behind pyrotechniques carefully before mixing things together. Chemistry isn't cooking and what one dosen't know can certainly hurt them!
