Smoke from vacuum cleaner?

I have smoke (burning smell) coming off my vacuum cleaner, all of a sudden (it is about a yr old only).. what could be the cause?

If your vacuum is working, it is probably lint collected around the electric motor of your vacuum. The copper coils get hot, and the lint obstructs the cooling airways of your motor, so it smokes as it burns.

If your vacuum isn't working, your roller might be jammed with hair, yarn, string, or some other type of obstruction that prevents movement. This means that the belt connecting your motor to the roller is burning.

it tell me that you got some in it and the belt just burn up on it . you need to pull the cover and check the belt.

It sounds like the belt is shot. Look at the bottom and remove any hair, rubber bands, etc.. and install a new belt.

Something has stopped the beater bar from turning...that smoke is the rubber belt burning as the motor turns on it. It will wear it in half. Turn it side ways and turn it on just for a second...does the beater bar turn...if not remove the bottom and see if anything is stuck there. If you don't see anything, it could be a bearing that has frozen up.

The most common cause is actually the beater head drive belt.  Generally you'll have a problem with getting a string or something wrapped around (and siezing) the drum, and spinning the belt either around the drum, or drive spindle, either way, heating up your belt and eventually burning/melting through it.  Sears carries new belts if yours is already shot, but if your belt is still good, as soon as you get whatever is stopping the drum from spinning, and get the over heated rubber off the belt (by running it), the smell and smoke should go away.  If the drum spins easily and you can't see any thing blocking the beater head, it's probably electrical and you'll want to take it to an appliance repairman or use your warranty.
