Question:

Smoke test 1996 Windstar?

Just had a smoke test performed on a 3.8 engine. Smoke came out of engine itself in two places. One beneath but between the cams on the center . The other somewhere near the intake air flow. Does this mean the engine is soon to fail?

  1. The engine is not about to fail but it probably means that your piston rings are well worn and allowing blow-by gases to escape. Could also be a clogged blow-by valve which should be replaced. If the fumes persist, chose a heavier weight oil or add 'Motor Honey' thickener. Or, of course, do a major overhaul on the engine including a ring replacement. A third choice is to replace the vehicle.

  2. It's not uncommon for the intake gaskets to leak as they ar just o-rings.  This is a common problem on these engine.  I have replaced many of these gaskets.  If the engine runs rough when cold or has a p0171 or p0174 codes stored in the computer, I would replace the intake gaskets, and that should fix that problem.  During a smoke test, smoke will come into the engine block because the smoke is going through the PCV system.  This is normal.  Except for the intake gaskets, if the engine is running fine, and not using a lot of oil, I would not worry about the condition of the engine.  Fix the intake gaskets, and drive the car for a while.
