Question:

Smoked salmon - raw salmon for sushi substitute?

Well, I bought smoked salmon because I was craving sushi.

I bought short grain rice, I know how to make everything and such, but, can I use the smoked salmon as a substitute for raw salmon?

On the package it says it's smoked and ready to enjoy.

Supposedly it's Alaskan wild salmon.

Anyways, it's precut and such, but I couldn't find any 'sushi grade' salmon or tuna.

Please reply.

Thanks.

  1. You can use smoked salmon in sushi any time you want. I like putting them with cucumber and cream cheese that's been mixed with crushed capers and garlic (known around here as a Philly roll). That's with cold smoked salmon. Hot smoked salmon is also nice in sushi. I am not a big fan of hot smoked salmon in sushi but I like it when its' been jerkied or turned into 'candy'.

Definitely cold smoked is interchangeable and very tasty.

  2. Yes, the smoking process cures the fish making it safe to eat. The fish is usually soaked in a brine solution prior to smoking. This brine usually contains a lot of salt which  cures the fish, the smoking  besides adding great flavor slightly cooks the fish.

  3. yes... you can... however, it will taste different, but still delicious.  Smoked salmon is smoked while raw salmon doesn't have the smoked, salty flavor.

  4. Smoked salmon is really good; raw unsmoked (or uncooked) salmon contains a tremendous amount of parasitic worms (google it and you'll see).

  5. Sure :)

I love smoked salmon sushi.. with cream cheese..

  6. Sure you can. It will be thinner in texture and have a smokier taste than regular salmon sushi, though. I'm sure it will be delicious if you like smoked salmon.
