Hi im 20 weeks pregnant and have cut down to 2 or 3 cigarettesa a day, but my friend (who miscarried at 10 weeks in january) is 14 weeks and is smoking 15 a day at most, but at least 8 every day. I know im a hypocrite when I say she needs to stop, but how much would 15 affect the baby? She smoked 20 a day before pregnancy and was devastated when she had the miscarriage. I dont want to keep on at her, but need some facts of how 15 could affect her pregnancy

  1. Smoking period, could cause her to miscarry again, low birth weight, and damage to the fetus's lungs or under-developed lungs.  Damage to the lungs can cause many different diseases or breathing problems, either at birth or later on in life.

  2. Give up together, you can be her support and she can be yours.  Your both putting your babies at risk.  Maybe if you talk to her in that way

"you know, we are both putting our babies at risk here, why don't we quit together?"

  3. If she can cut that down in half, she and the baby will be alright.

I smoked 5-7 a day during all 3 of mine, and I ended up with 3 big and healthy babies. My Dr. told me to cutback, and not quit. He said quitting could put stress on me and harm the baby. So his suggestion benefited my children.

You know her miscarriage could have happened without smoking too. Non smokers miscarry too. It's called genetics. That could be why she did.

My sister, MIL, and SIL all smoked while pregnant too, and between us we have 13 healthy children out of 13 pregnancies. That's more than luck. Wouldn't you say? It's all genes. Just like the miscarriage.

  4. I smoke and I'm 7months pregnant but i don't smoke 15 a day the most i smoke is 4 a day she should try and cut back but i have heard of other people smoking a pack a day when pregnant and the baby was healthy so  its really heard to say because people have there own opinion on smoking well pregnant

Plus my mom smoke with me when she was pregnant with me and I have never ever had a health problem my whole life

  5. The more a woman smokes during pregnancy can cause low birth-weight, even if they cut back/stop completely by the second trimester.

The more she smokes, the more likely she is to have a baby with birth defects, most commonly congenital heart failure, on top of that it can cause placenta previa and placenta abruption.

It can also cause pre-term birth and heavy bleeding.

  6. You can't change her, after all she is the one who had the miscarriage. She is accountable for what she does.   All you can do is take best care of your baby.  Smoking results in low birth weights and other harmful stuff.  More than likely she miscarried because that's nature's way of taking care of an unviable fetus, but smoking is just not good for any of you.

  7. Here are some risks that MAY happen if smoking while pregnant (Even passive smoking):

    1. spontaneous abortions

    2. ectopic pregnancies

    3. other birth and delivery problems

    4. fetal brain damage

    5. growth retardation/low birth weight (Babies of smoking women average 6 oz. Less at birth than babies of nonsmoking women.)

    6. lower or higher than normal infant blood pressure (dep. on gestational age at birth)

    7. problems requiring neonatal intensive care

    8. infant death from perinatal disorders; sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

    9. cancer-causing agents in infants' blood; potentially carcinogenic genetic mutations; and childhood leukemia

    10. mental retardation

    11. respiratory disorders during childhood

    12. eye problems during childhood

    13. Attention Deficit Disorder

    14. other learning and developmental problems

    15. behavioral problems even into the adolescent years

    16. smoking during adolescence

    17. various adult health problems including obesity

  8. Dont take away the chance of your baby being healthy

  9. 15 a day effects the baby just as much as 2-3 a day. You really have no room to talk. How about you just lay off her back... she's doing the best she can.

  10. well I'm going to be honest with you.. one of my good friends smoked while pregnant and her son still is not right.  She carried him full term but his lungs were still messed up.  She had to have a sleep apnea monitor (which monitors breathing patterns) b/c her sons oxygen level would drop greatly.  she constantly had monitor him and any little noise he made she went running because the dr's were afraid he would stop breathing.  Still to this day he has a breathing machine that he has to use at least once a week and he is 4 years old.  Its just not a good idea to smoke while pregnant.  I know its probablly hard (I dont smoke and never have) but your friend and yourself both need to be thinking about your baby who has no choice in the matter.  just stop for the remainder of your pregnancy at least!  It will be so worth it if you can avoid having to go through what my friend did.  And she smoked somewhere between 5 and up to a whole pack a day.  Hope everything is fine with both of ya'lls babys

  11. She could lose this baby just like she lost the other one.

  12. I smoked the first 6 weeks with my daughter and the first 8 weeks with this little one and i quit cold turkey becuase i didnt want to hurt my baby ill prob, start again after i have him just like i did with my daughter, but anyways i had a friend who smoked the whole time she was pregnant and her son had to have a blood transfusion when he was 5 weeks old and was in the hopital until he was 2 months and he still has alot of health problems, i would quit if i were you and your friend, your babies better off

  13. it could be the reason she lost the first babe. she almost 4mths so the babe has started forming its lungs and if she dont stop the babes lungs could never develop fully, it could also cause asthma. it basically smuthers the babe and she will prob have it prematurely

  14. 1 or 15 they affect the baby the same way. I was a smoker too and I quit when i found out, some of your risks are premature baby, and placenta previa. Its a good idea to quit but if you talk to alot of women there are not really a whole lot that have seen these affects. The healthier you can be the better it is for you and your baby. Good Luck

  15. When I found out I was preggers, I quit smoking right away.  My friend wasn't able to however and she had no intentions on doing it.  Her son has since been born with Asthma.  I asked my doctor about this and he said smoking no more than 4 a day was the max before you really start doing some damage.  I know it's hard but you really should just stop all together.  Not worth the risk.

  16. Why are you even asking this question?  I think you already know the answer.

Smoking one a day is just plain stupid and very SELFISH of you.

  17. There isn't any info about how many will cause what, but smoking any at all can cause premature rupture of membranes, miscarriage, birth defects, and low birth weight. It can also cause still birth, cerebral pausy, long term health defects, such as asthma, mental retardation, learning problems, as well as congenital heart defects. It can also cause pregnancy complications such as placenta previa, and placental abruption, and premature rupture of membranes.

  18. thats really sad. its not u that should be on her it should be her doctor that should keep on her about it. obviously if she was so upset the first time why is she doing it again. YOU too shouldnt even be smoking. if i was either of your doctors and knew that i would discontuine being your doctor.

  19. Maybe you could lead by example and give up smoking yourself?

Sorry I cant give you any medical facts, but saying "I know I'm a hypocrite" wont support your argument.

  20. this can very much affect the baby, if you dont misscarry, and the baby survives, then the baby will most likely have asthma. having asthma at a young age can mean that the baby may die in the hospital. so yes please incourage your friend to stop.

Heres a link that might want to change your friends mind because we all know that our childrens best interest is at heart. Maybe this could be a good opportunity for you and your friend to quit smoking altogether. Think positives. By the way i was also a smoker and quit cold turkey so yes it can be done (i didnt say it was easy) but nonetheless can be done. Congratulations to you both and i hope that this was a little bit more informative to you both.

  22. please try stop smoking ,that can hurt the from develipment ,and it could case problem ,not only for you but for your baby, and you want healthly babe,so please you want healthly baby stop smoking ,god bless take care ,,
