  1. Because almost everyone drinks and it makes much more money for the government than cigarettes do. It's been proven time and again that 2nd hand smoke has never hurt anyone while 2nd hand drinking kills about 40,000 peeps a year on the highways and cripples about 150,000 more.

Smoking is the whipping boy for a nation determined to look as if they want to clean 'something' up, whether that 'thing' is an actual danger or not. So they zeroed in on smoking since it was out numbered and started their trite little 'clean up' campaigns.

It was also a way to raise cigarette taxes a huge amount and make money. The cigarette ban is a perfect example of how stupid a society can be.

The old adage "Nobody ever lost money by under-estimating the stupidity of the American public" is in it's truest form applied to that situation.

  2. Here in the US, we DO have adverts for beer, wine, gin, tequila, and all manner of spirits.  They allow those ads because it's possible to use these alcohol products and not poison yourself, while tobacco can  not be used without deleterious (harmful) effects.

  3. You may have noticed that in most countries, advertising cigarettes on Formula 1 cars is banned, yet several European TV stations advertise alcohol before and sometimes during the races. Surely alcohol and driving should not be encouraged.

I drink and smoke, but it's the alcohol adverts which really bug me.

  4. Most of the drinking ads on UK TV at the moment are to try and make you STOP drinking - hence all the business about "Units" all the time, although I must say I take offence at the supermarkets advertising 24 cans of lager for tuppence ha'penny or whatever they charge.........

  5. You may have noticed that alcohol adverts are limited to beer and wine - they do not advertise hard liquors like bourbon, vodka, scotch, etc.  Those were all banned around the time the smoking advert ban started.

A reason is the fact that alcohol affects the person drinking it while smoking affects the person and the people around the smoker.

Smoking sections in restaurants/bars/airplanes, etc are equivilent to "peeing sections" of a pool.  There's really no way to escape it.

  6. taxes, the legislation hasnt had a chance to ban it yet, give it time,,

  7. The political correctness brigade have ruined our society and culture. Whatever happened to lynch mobs and the like, sorting out the REAL problems properly. Whilst having GOOD moral codes. Banning specific adverts really is just a sad farce. It goes to show what a nonsensical stuper we have got ourselves into, when the rabble conducts the process of decision making. Who goes and smokes and drinks themselves to death and blames it on advertising... MORONS that's who! And the common moron should know his or her place. Why change an arrangement which worked well for millennia. If you cant make sense - keep mouth closed, you know? Banning smoking in drinking establishments just makes me wonder where the h**l it is all going to end. Orwellian nightmare. Basically the answer is that it's political back scratching one way or another. We're raised by the state to be childish and naive, then we're treated as such. Think of the pyramids in eygpt. Then think again, and again, and again...

  8. You can see smoke better than you can see drunk.
