Question:

Smoking and singing?

I'm not a heavy smoker at all. The smoking in my house kind of took a toll on me and I recently couldn't resist anymore and smoked a few starting a month ago. The most I smoked was maybe 5 a week. The brand was Newport lights. I love to sing and now I'm afraid the smoking ruined my voice and my singing capacity. I know some people purposely smoke to make their voice raspy/husky/deeper but I do not want to do that, I do not want my voice to change at all. Can one month of smoking light cigarettes + inhaling second hand smoking change/ruin my voice or does it takes years of smoking + smoking heavy cigarettes to alter/ruin one's voice?

  1. Any smoke/smoking at all is not good for your voice.

Singing healthfully is all about airflow and smoking limits how well you are able to breath.

If you are trying to be a serious vocalist I think you should stop any smoke inhalation.

  2. Smoking five cigarettes a week will do nothing to your voice. It's the heavy smoking or long periods of time that'll do it.

  3. Tons of famous singers, past and present and their voices were fine. From Frank Sinatra to Madonna.  We're talking chain smokers too. Not some 5 a week.
