I heard that in my highschool there used to be a smoking section for students back in the late 70's early 80's and it wasn't all that uncommon back then in other schools. Is this true??

  1. idk

  2. which high school

  3. That is true. But about the time they decided it was wrong to stop selling junk food on campus they decided to get rid of these areas also.

  4. I've never heard of that!

  5. It's not too unlikely. A smoking section may have been provided to curtail smoking in less desirable locations. (I remember having to make my way through a crowd of teenagers smoking in the small foyer of a senior public school [grades 7 and 8] on a cold winter day.) You have to bear in mind that at the time people smoked virtually everywhere except on elevators.

  6. Yes, it is true. I went to school in Shelby County, Alabama and my high school had a smoking area for students located outside. I believe the student smoking area was abated in 1978-1979, because it was no longer there when I began my freshman year in 1979-80.

However, students were permitted to smoke in their cars, even if they were on campus. Anyone could smoke at football games even in the bleachers. Of course, we band members were prohibited from smoking while in uniform.

Oh, and kids did smoke in the bathrooms...that is until the administration shut down all but one of the restrooms...the one nearest the office. Now, that was some great thinking for a school of nearly 1000 student bladders.

Teachers were allowed to smoke in the teacher's lounge, and man did the hallway reek near that door!

  7. True - we had the smokers section at the top of the hill and in the parking lot - those places were both removed from the first buildings of our high school (we had 6 buildings total).  That was in the late '70's.

  8. Sure, I'm old enough to remember it. It wasn't just outside, a lot of schools allowed it in an indoor area or the cafeteria. Eventually they passed laws that prevented schools from allowing smoking on campus, and kids went back to smoking off campus and in the bathrooms.
