How do I get rid of the smell in my new house? The people that lived here smoked a lot. We've tried painting, wall wash, candles, what should I do?

  1. you might need to repaint the walls by using a special primer that seals in odours, if washing down the walls doesn't work that is the only thing that I can think of ,aside from keeping windows open as much as you can , if there are drapes that were left behind ,take them down and wash them .

  2. Soft surfaces hold odors. Have you removed all window treatments, carpets, etc.?

  3. I recommend Bin, which is a top quality shellac-based primer. That should hold the smell in where a cheaper primer would not.

  4. A friend of mine had the same problem.  They tired everything including the odor sealing primer.  They ended up having to re-paster the living room (where most of the smell was) because it was so bad.  The primer only worked in the rooms that weren't as heavily smoked in.  Sorry.
