Question:

Smooching cats??????

I always thought domestic animals would do what the needed to do, in order to get the basics,, ie food, water, warmth

So why does my cat (and other cats) smooch all around me and go all dribbly when they have already been fed and watered, its just for affection rather than anything else?

  1. sounds like its just affection but cats will also sometimes do that if they were taken away from their mothers too young.

  2. I would doubt very much that cats (or dogs for that matter) have any idea of what affection is.  They might be 'dribbly' because they are looking for another treat - is this something that you give them?

The other possible option is that they see you as their prey.  Or that they simply have a mouth infection causing salivation.

  3. Many cats, just like dogs, will smooch just because they like smooching. It is about affection, both receiving it and giving it. You're lucky!

  4. They are obviously very fond of you. All cats are different. I have 11 cats, and some smooch around me after they have been fed, and some dont. I have one in particular, that when he is being stroked, he dribbles the whole time. You should be happy, that you cat is very affectionate.

  5. Possibly they are showing their thanks for being fed and kept safe. My male drools when he's being petted and snuggled. The vet says it's because he's so relaxed and content. As long as there teeth are healthy and nothing wrong with their mouth, drooling is nothing to be concerned with. Messy and annoying at times but not harmful. My cats even rub noses with me to show affection. I'm told that's the ultimate sign of affection from a cat.
