Smoothies give me Diarrhea?

I love smoothies but whenever I drink one I have to go to the bathroom (#2) within an hour and its usually diarrhea or at least really soft. This also happens when I eat donuts. I usually just have to go to the bathroom once and its diarrhea and that's it, I don't have to go constantly.Does anyone know why this happens to me??

  1. two smoothies a week is good for you. keeping you cleaned out,it will make you feel a whole lot better and have more energy.just plan them when you have time for it to work and not mess up your daily schedule .good luck

  2. You might be sufffering  from lactose intolerance- the sugar found in milk. Smoothies are load with milk or juice or ice cream.

One common cause of diarrhea is lactose intolerance, the inability to adequately digest the milk sugar called lactose. When it does, you’re no longer producing sufficient quantities of lactase, the enzyme necessary for lactose digestion and, thus, the digestion of all dairy products. When the lactose reaches the colon undigested, there is bacterial digestion and fermentation of the lactose. The result can be watery diarrhea, as well as gas, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, a feeling of an "acid stomach," and/or fatigue

Note that the reaction to lactose is sometimes dose-dependent, with different people's tolerances widely variable. Some people can tolerate small amounts of dairy products or foods that have relatively low levels of lactose but will react badly to larger amounts. For example, they may be able to tolerate the lower amounts of lactose found in yogurt, buttermilk, kefir, aged cheese, and "sweet acidophilus" milk (which is actually fermented milk) or reduced-lactose milk (which has had lactase added to it to help you digest it).

However, the same person that can consume those things with no problem may get gas and diarrhea if they drink a big glass of milk. For others, even very small quantities of dairy products can cause diarrhea. This could be as little as a teaspoon of cream in coffee, a small dab of cheese on your pasta, one cookie or piece of bread that contains milk powder or whey, one sandwich with luncheon meat containing milk powder, a smidgen of ice cream, a supplement or weight gain drink containing lactose, or a dab of margarine that contains whey.

Be aware that, by volume, there is more lactose in lower fat products.

    such as doughnuts.

  3. smoothies are not very healthy unless you make them yourself and obviously donuts are not healthy either. so maybe its your body telling you not to eat/drink those things.

  4. You may be sensitive to gluten, a byproduct of wheat that is added to smoothies as a thickening agent. It's also in many donuts. It could be soy, too, since soy is less common in food than wheat. It could also be related to fructose or maltose, which are types of sugar molecules. I'm assuming you're not lactose intolerant.

The best advice I can give you is to ask the smoothie store for a nutrition facts card containing ingredient information. Compare this to the ingredient list for the donuts, and if anything matches you can narrow down the probable cause. Once you discover a suspect, eat something containing that ingredient and see if you get diarrhea.

If it becomes problematic, your doctor can administer an antibody test to determine the specific allergen. Good luck!
