Question:

Snail and airstone questions?

First question. Can I put the device I connect the airstone tubing to in the water? The little thing that vibrates and makes all the air that goes to the stone.

Second question. I have a 10 gallon setup where I don't want or really need a lid for the fish due to the water low. I just noticed that one of my poor snails had climbed out and got dried up under my desklamp. The only easy way in and out of the tank for him would have been to climb up the tubing I have for the airstone. Is there anyway to make it so the snails stay insider as I don't want my floor covered in dessicated snails.

  1. No, you cannot put the air pump in the water. It will electrocute the snails and fish and you if you touch the water.

I don't know if this will work but you could somehow glue (hotglue?) a plastic pop top to the hose and it would stop the snails for climbing out. We have a plastic dome shaped shield on our bird feeder that prevents squirrels from climbing up the pole and eating the food. You could cut a plastic bottle top off and then hotglue it to the hose by running the hose through the hole and gluing there.

If a snail touches metal it will die.

  2. First of all no you can't put the air pump device in the water that would be really bad.

Although that is uncommon for a snail to crawl out of the water if you want to make sure it doesn't happen again I recommend getting a lid. I always put them on my tank because you never know what could happen.

  3. do not put the air pump in the water

i heard you can put copper tape around the edge

this either kills them or stops them getting out i cant remember what one
