Snake Pit at the Innisbrook ready to challenge players in Transitions Championship – Golf News
The final three-hole stretch at the Innisbrook, a Salamander Golf & Spa Resort, is named as Snake pit because of its difficulty and plenty of hazards.
Innisbrook is the host of this year’s Transitions Championship scheduled from March 15 to 18, 2012.
While the players are getting prepared to formally get started on Thursday, they should keep in mind that the 1,120-yard collection of the hazards available on the final three holes can totally change the course of the game.
The 16th hole was regarded as the toughest one during last year’s Transitions Championship.
The 460-yard par-4 16th hole is completely covered with the water hazard from the right side and with thick lane of trees on the left side.
Therefore, perfection is the key to remain in the game if the player is standing on top of the leaderboard.
According to the past records, making a birdie is almost impossible on the final three holes. Therefore, it is said that whoever makes the par shot, he is in perfect position to make a difference on the leaderboard.
According to different players, making the course difficult in the end is a good technique to make the events more interesting.
"I think it's as good a finish as we have on the PGA Tour," defending champion Gary Woodland said.
He added, "You have to get the holes before you get to 16 if you want to shoot a good score. If you have to make three pars coming in, you have your work cut out for you".
He continued, "There is not a birdie hole the last three holes. If you're two back and have signed your scorecard and the leaders are still out there, you're definitely hanging around to see what happens".
Last year, the players made a total of 141 birdies against 251 bogeys and 27 double bogeys on the final three holes, which speaks of the toughness of the course.
Moreover, the average for the holes last year was 0.455 strokes over par and it is ranked as the fifth toughest stretch on the PGA Tour.
Therefore, giving it a name of ‘Snake Pit’ perfectly suits the level of difficulty it offers to players.
