  1. MOTH BALLS, MOTH BALLS AND MORE MOTH BALLS!

Snakes have a very sensitive sense of smell! They hate things that are strong like that. I would suggest putting moth balls around your garden! Be sure not to put them right next to the plants. Around the garden and maybe 1 or 2 near his hole till he leaves would be a good idea. And work really really well!

  2. just pick it up and move it elsewhere, it won't bit and is not dangerous. if you don't want to touch it then put a glove on. they aren't slimy BTW, they are soft like silk.

  3. Since it won't hurt you, leave it alone.

It eats plenty of garden pests that would eat the tomatoes!

  4. Toss a few moth balls around the plants, snakes hate moth balls!

  5. Most snakes don't stay in one place very long and upon seeing you will make every effort to leave the scene.  If you know the snake is not poisonous you should leave him alone and he will go his own way without any help, most likely never to be seen again.  That said, if your visitor was black with yellow racing stripes running the length of his body he was a perfectly harmless Garter Snake and if he was between a foot and two feet long was hunting insects and therefore doing his best to help you with the insect problems that frequently go with raising tomatoes.  But you should be able to identify a poisonous snake, there are only four basic species in the US (Rattlesnake,Water Moccasin, Copperhead and Coral Snake), and know how best to either destroy or avoid them.  Do your homework.
