Ok i have been researching and studying animals including snakes for 7 years (Im 13). I have been handleing snakes since i was 7. I need u to answer some questions:

1. Can u list types of snakes species aloud as pets? (websites would help)

2. What types of snakes are u not aloud to have?

3. Do u feel concerned that a large percentages of pythons have been released in the Everglades and there is now a breeding percentages of these non native pythons and boas that are moving to urban houses and little kids or sometimes adults could be hurt or killed because of this.

The largest python that was wild in Florida was 22 ft and was NON native. These snakes are native to Asia and are now making a population of them in Florida.

  1. 1) Your local authorities determine this in conjunction with your own laws and those of other laws that they might fall under the jurisdiction of. You'd need to ask them or at least tell us where you live.

    2) Again that is up to your local authorities but all in all the list is generally much longer in favor of those you can have versus those you can't have.

    3) Of course it's a concern. I don't know if it's more an issue of being socially irresponsible, or truly ignorant of what the animals really are when they get them.

Some people don't quite understand that the 1.5 foot baby Burmese is in short order (a few years) going to easily be 10 to 12 foot long and weigh about 100lbs. When the snake gets to be that size and you suddenly find friends won't come within 5 miles of your house AND you've just had to give half a bedroom to this snake you begin to wonder if it isn't easier to just get rid of it.

Sadly many people have the same thought. It's very hard to find someone to rehome a large (10+ foot snake). Sometimes you'll get lucky with a zoo or a reptile rescue but it's not a sure thing.

Compound all of that further with the risk large snakes put other people at like you mentioned and I firmly believe there needs to regulations on large species of snake. But I don't believe it is government regulation that will do the job but industry and individual regulations. For instance even a 15 minute handling session followed by about 15 minutes of Q&A would dissuade the average person from wanting a snake that gets over 10 feet long.

Just my thoughts thanks for reading.
