Snake venom vaccine?

since any toxic substaces from animals that are inhaled or ingested to cause harm are poisons and animal produced toxins that are injected to cause harm are called venoms, and certain animals (some birds, mamals and kingsnakes) that prey on venomous snakes form an immunity to the venom, we are able to create antivenoms from the antibodies of these animals, could it be possible maybe to create a VACCINE for humans to protect us from the harmful reactions, or at least delay the reactions of snake bite venom?

  1. Vaccine production depends entirely on the strength of the antigens of the organism against which the vaccine is to be produced. The somatic antigen are commonly utilized in vaccine production, together with secretory  excretory antigens or others. The antibodies produced against these antigens usually take the shape of the antigen in an inverted manner to be able to clip on the antigen and stop the invading organism (restrict its movement) to set ready for phagocytic cells.

Venoms are protein in nature with no somatic antigens hence all antibodies produced against them are shot-life antibodies,  to be used during the time of bite.

  2. yes

infact treatment of snake bights and jellyfish stings uses such vaccines and vaccines straight from the pioson itself

not all venoms can be treated fast enogh to save you though

  3. Sure. Wyeth is probably the largest manufacturer of antivenin and the Bhutantan (sp?) Institute, in Brazil, is probably the largest in the world. These antivenins are used after the bite has occurred.

The "vaccine" idea you describe was tried by Bill Haast, who worked with cobras all day. He started injecting himself with gradually-increasing doses of cobra venom. The cobras "helped" too. He was bitten more than a hundred times, I think. He has been known to offer his blood as antivenin; I don't know whether he has ever been taken up on his offer.
