Question:

Snapped Tomato Plant?

I'm just back from a holiday to find that one of my tomato plants has grown so tall that it collapsed in the middle and snapped. It's not completely snapped, its just hanging on there. But the part at the top is bearing all the fruit, so is there anyway to save it?

  1. I had one this year. It wasn' snapped right through. I tied  top and bottom of the damge to keep it secure, after I had bound it tightly with cellotape. The stalk has repaired itself and is now producing toms. Just depends on how bad the damage is.

  2. Very gently raise the plant back up right and plint it with two lollipop sticks or as I have done in my Dads greenhouse lay the plant on its side and lay the fruit on a bed of straw

  3. Hi,tie it to stakes with a lot a luck the tomato's will keep

    getting enough food to grow.

    Good Luck

  4. believe it or not,put a plaster around the break and tie stalk to a stick in ground,or try sellotape instead,it really does work.

  5. If its mature and the stalk has reached full size then you could try wrapping some cloth around it to support it together with a couple of wooden stakes. However, unless you are very lucky I'm afraid it is probably terminal. If you have unripened fruit above the broken part pick it and place on a window sill in sunlight or at least natural light. It might take a week or so but it should eventually ripen.

  6. Try supporting it with canes and ties,  Might be connected enough to   bear some fruit.  .. You should have tied it in well before your holiday,   ??? Did someone come in and water them while you were away??

  7. I did that yesterday, i don't think you can save it. i cant think of any way other than supporting the snapped half to the other and maybe it might re join. ?

  8. Besides the advice given here by others, another good tip is to cut off other long stalks of the plant (those without fruit) and try to propagate a new one.  Stick a fresh cutting into water and roots should grow within a week.  You then will have an identical plant to the parent plant.

  9. Stand it up and support it using a cane and ties.

Remove maturer fruit this will take away some of the weight and allow them to ripen in the sun on a window seal.

  10. my ''tomato'' plant did the same..i used 2 lollypop sticks and tape it together till it was ready to smoke,i mean pick.  ;]
