Snare drum rudiments to get faster?

currently I can't play doubles that fast.

I need to be able to roll so all I ever practice is RRLLRRLLRRLL and so on over and over again.

I start slow and then when I'm comfortable I speed up and hold it as long as I can and then slow down again.

It seems to help a little but I wanna know if theres something else I could practice.

I've also been told that if I want to be able to go faster, I need to loosen my grip when I get to high speeds. It's not the easiest thing to do however. <-- Any tips on that?

  1. Imagine you're bouncing a tennis ball. That's how it should feel when you are dropping the sticks for a roll. Practice dropping it and see how high you can get the stick to bounce back to you.

There are a lot of drum rudiments out there. Paradiddle is a good one. RLRR LRLL

Youtube also has a lot of instructional drum videos. Just do a search there for drum rudiments.

  2. A loose, comfortable hold on the sticks has to do with the fulcrum being correct. If you're using match grip of course they'll be the same. Just make certain you're not choking the sticks and that you're allowing the sticks to rebound.

Your job is to control the ricochet rather than force a bounce.
