Sneijder-Inter Milan contract renewal talks falter as Chelsea and Manchester United lurk around
Speculation in the English media is rife that the ongoing contract renewal talks between Wesley Sneijder and Internazionale have hit the wall. According to latest reports, Inter Milan wanted the talismanic attacker to extend his contract until 2015. Sneijder
is the first name on the Inter team sheet but the midfielder is far from satisfied with the club authorities as the player’s agent claimed that Inter had failed to fulfil their promises.
The 26-year-old World cup finalist was the architect behind the club’s historic treble last season. His form was such that many have tipped him to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of the stupendously talented Lionel Messi. Messi had scored 47 goals in all competitions
last season.
Sneijder arrived at the San Siro following his forced exit from Real Madrid following the arrival of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo last season. The creative midfielder was adamant to stay but the club president showed him the door. Inter Milan paid 15 million
Euros for his services which were peanuts if compared to what the striker won them in return. Sneijder formed a lethal partnership with strikers Diego Milito and Samuel Eto’o, often setting up the duo for many goals during the season.
According to the player’s agent Soren Lerby, the two parties have clashing views on the financial aspect of the contract. The talks are not likely to bear much fruit unless the club shows some sort of flexibility.
Amidst the failing contract talks, Premier League outfits Chelsea and Manchester United, Carlo Ancelotti and Alex Ferguson are big admirers of the playmaker’s talents and would pounce on the first opportunity to sign him. Manchester United has been looking
for a natural replacement to legendary Paul Scholes. Scholes has been with the club since 1994 when he made his senior debut. The playmaker isn’t getting any younger and Ferguson will find no better replacement than Sneijder
Chelsea, bankrolled by Russian oil tycoon Roman Abramovich, is still looking to win their first UEFA Champions League title. Wesley Sneijder’s exploits with Inter last season seems to have the Chelsea management convinced that the midfielder is indeed the
last piece in their jigsaw puzzle. Should Sneijder be made available, Ancelotti will do all he can to sign the Dutchman.
Nerazzurri faithful will be hoping the club and their iconic number 10 resolve their issues as the ongoing row looks set to affect the dressing room.
