  1. Many beautiful places to go snorkeling. On the Andaman Sea, the best in my opinion is Koh Similan, off the coast from Phuket. Probably your best bet in December. On the Gulf of Thailand side, Koh Tao is also pretty nice for snorkeling, but scuba is the real attraction there. But even snorkeling is great, right from the shores, or you can hire a longtail boat that will take you around to the best spots. December should be a good time to dive on Koh Tao. Mu Ko Surin, not far from South Surin Island, is also a top place for snorkeling. Tarutao is also beautiful, it is a marine national park between the border of Thailand and Malaysia.

My own favourite is Koh Tao overall, not just for the snorkeling but also scuba, ambiance, scenery, and ease to get there and travel on the island. You can rent a beach bungalow for under 6,000 bahts a month, and a motorbike for less than 150 baht a day.

  2. But remember all the coral reefs are dead,Its **** ive seen better stuff in my local rock pool.

  3. I have done it a number of times.  Don't worry they give you all the euqipment including a life vest that will kept you afloat.  One thing is to kept track of the weather, if rough seas I would put it off for a better day.  Kho Tao, and some of the island off of Phi Phi and Similian Islands are nice.

  4. Certain parts of the coral reef were damaged by the 2004 Tsunami wave, however..not all coral is dead, and I too would recommend Similan or Tarutao. In Phuket Raya Island is a popular place for diving and snorkelling. If you are a beginner, try some closer destinations before you pay for a longer trip. Good coral usually means deeper water as shallow water coral is less colourful and often faces damage from sunlight at low water, fishing nets, boats and tourists.

Please check with local boat driver or beach staff about areas of strong currents.

Remember too that at full moon the water is the deepest and the currents are stronger, if you are unable to swim against the current use your initiative and go with the water until you can find an easier way to get to shore.

Most accidents happen when people get exhausted by swimming against the current, unsuccessfully, then panic.

Wearing a lifejacket is a good idea,
