Snooker: Rules about the game and value of Snooker balls
The first basic rule in playing snooker is to know about the snooker balls. Each player uses a white ball to play a shot. The object balls are basically coloured balls including 15 Red balls, a Yellow, a Green, a Brown, a Blue, a Pink and a ball in Black colour. Each red ball has one point, Yellow is of 2 points, Green 3, Brown 4, Blue 5, Pink 6 and Black 7. In order to score first you need to pot the Red ball followed by a colour ball. As soon as all the red balls are finished off the table then the coloured balls are potted according to their points order. The one who makes the highest score in the game is the winner.
The balls are potted according to their order. The cue ball is placed in hand where as the other balls are positioned on the table. The red balls are placed in a rhombus triangle and are as close to the pink ball as possible. The yellow ball is placed on the “D” at right hand corner, followed by the Green ball which is also placed on “D” but on left hand corner. The Brown ball is placed in the centre of the “D” on line. The Blue ball takes its position at the centre spot. The Pink ball is placed near the red balls. The last spot left on the table near the border is covered by the Black ball.
The game starts when one of the players breaks the frame consisting of Red balls. After the balls are opened the players start potting the balls in the pockets. After potting a Red ball the player moves towards a colour ball. The colour balls are placed back in their original location after they are potted. The process continues until the break is broken. After all the red balls are finished from the table the players move toward the colour balls.
Spotting of the ball is another important rule of this game. If any colour is potted it will be placed in its original position. In case the position is occupied by another ball then the colour will be placed at the highest value spot available. If all the spots on the table are already filled up then the colour will be placed closest to its actual spot.
While playing a shot if a foul occurs resulting in a snookered cue ball then the opponent is awarded a Free Ball. A free ball is a ball which is nominated by the player if snooker is placed on the cue ball. The free ball call is neglected if the player is again called to play the shot. In case the free ball is potted then the ball is placed back in the table. The player receives the point of the ball that was actually being played.
Foul is an important part of the rules regarding to snooker. Fouls usually occur when a player fails to hit the right ball or when the player pots the cue ball in the pocket. Foul also takes place if the ball bounces off the table. The fouls usually hold penalty of minimum four points. If a foul takes place on a higher value ball such as Blue ball, Pink ball or Black then the points will be according to the ball’s value.
The game only ends when all the balls in the table are potted. The player with the highest score is awarded victory in the end. In some cases when the Black ball is potted the score becomes level. At that time the Black ball is again placed in its original spot. The player takes a shot of the Black ball from the D with a cue ball. The one who pots the Black ball in the end wins the game. With the help of these rules it becomes easy for the players to play and understand the game.
