my mate at work said that in the late 50's grandstand launched a new version of snooker called snooker plus in order to increase waining support for the game. he said that the had 8 coloured balls instead of 6 plus the reds with 8 and 9 points for the 2 new balls. he didn't know what colour the other balls were and said that it only lasted for a few years before the stopped it. is he talking rubbish or is he speaking the truth? and if he's speaking the truth what colour were the 2 new balls.

  1. dont remember that but in the 90's they tried to launch a new one called 10 ball (10 reds and an extra colour worth 10)

    it flopped

  3. Snooker Plus was a variation on the game of snooker and it was created by Joe Davis, the reigning World snooker champion of the time.

He attempted to reinvigorate the declining popularity of the sport by adding an orange ball (8 points) and a purple ball (10 points) to the set: The idea was that this would increase the maximum break from 147 to 210, and so help to attract a greater audience.

It was introduced to the public on 26 October 1959 during a major snooker tournament, but failed to catch on.

you can see a layout of the balls for snooker plus on this site.
