Snorkel Help?

when you snorkel do u have to be an expert swimmer... how do you snorkel??

Having good swimming skills would certainly be a good thing for anyone wanting to go skin-diving/snorkeling.  It would add to the safety of the experience, help self-confidence and ultimately enjoyment.  But no significant expertise in swimming is really needed as long as you can keep afloat and don't over-extend yourself.  Breathing through a snorkel is almost like breathing normally, just a little extra effort on the exhalation to clear any carbon-dioxide build-up in the tube.

The snorkel should be properly attached to a dive-mask with a 'snorkel keeper' to keep it in proper position.  If you will be diving down to look at things under the surface you should get someone to teach you how to surface-dive and how to properly clear the snorkel.  Not a difficult skills to pick up, but a little instruction can make it easier.

Using fins also makes the experience easier and less tiring.  Depending on water temperature, wearing a 'dive-skin' might be a good idea.  In some circumstances using a free-diver's inflatable vest is a good idea.  But for typical tropical water snorkeling, especially on a guided trip, nothing like that is required.

You do not need any experience to snorkel. You just put the device in your mouth and practice a few breathes. Its really easy  because I have done it with my whole family. They only problem can be in choppy water where water can get in the snorkel and in your mouth!
