my siblings and i are going snorkeling in hanauma bay and we're wondering if we need reef/coral shoes so if our feet hit anything, they don't get hurt.

and also, if we can't buy the shoes, what would be a good alternative?

  1. No, you don't need them unless you plan on walking on any of the reef which not many people do. You don't need to go to the reef, there is plenty to see in the bay and the fish are everywhere...they're not shy about swimming to you.

  2. If you are snorkeling, you don't need to worry about buying special footwear. It is actually really bad for you to step on the coral and rocks out there (it kills the coral) so it's better if you don't. If you don't buy the reef walkers you won't try to!

If you do end up getting a scratch on some coral (usually people get them more on knees and elbows) make sure to see a doctor to get all the coral out. You can get sick from that.

  3. You'll be able to rent fins along with your mask and snorkel, if you don't already have them. Hanauma Bay has excellent snorkeling! It is shallow and calm, and an easy place to swim. You won't get hurt. More importantly, you just have to make sure not to harm the coral or anything else in the living environment.

  4. You can just get water shoes at Wal-Mart where you live.  Flippers are better, give you more power and control, you can rent them there or any Boss Frog's or other place for around $7 a day.  Just don't go out too far - rip tides often take people out, and lifegaurds do almost daily rescues.

  5. You are going to have on the swim fins, your feet won't get hurt at Hanauma bay.

The bigger danger is getting totally fried on your back.  Come out of the water and reapply sunscreen often, or wear a t-shirt.  I snorkeled there the day before we flew home, and had a sunburned painful back on the plane for 7 hours!
