Snorkeling in Catalina?

I plan on going to Catalina to snorkel, and I was wondering if I would need to go with a tour to go snorkeling, or if I can just find a good public spot and go there.

i suggest going with a tour so u don't get lost

i have gone many times and would never go alone

There's a place by descanso beach where you can rent snorkel gear for 3.50 an hr and you can snorkel there on that beach. I know only bc I called today as I'm gong on the 1st. I just hope I don't encounter any sharks!
