Snow Top Mountain wins the Grade 3, Suwannee River Stakes at the Gulfstream Park
On 11th February, Snow Top Mountain won the Grade 3, $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes at the Gulfstream Park, which was raced over 1 1/8 miles on turf. She raced through the distance in a minute and :52.86 seconds.
The runner up for the race was Hit It Rich and reserving the third position was Gold d’Oro.
"We’ve kind of considered her a little sister (to Hunter’s multiple stakes-winner Keertana), but after this race we might have to reconsider," Proctor said. "That was a solid field with five or six in there that look like they are solid grade III horses.
"She’s versatile, so there are plenty of options out there for her and Keertana, and we have Marketing Mix for the same kind of races as well. It’s a good problem to have. I’m not one to make a lot of plans ahead for the horses. We’ll just see what comes along.”
Out of the twenty times that she has taken part in, this was the sixth time that Snow Top Mountain has won and the exciting element to this victory is the fact that it is the first time that she has claimed a graded race, otherwise she has only been positioned in a handful.
The five-year-old mare of Najran out of Motokiks, Snow Top Mountain had early on stretched the second placing streak to five in 2010. It started off from Grade 3, Regret Stakes then was the way for Grade 3, Arlington Oaks which was followed by two non graded races, Hattie Moseley Stakes and Riskaverse. The streak ended with the Grade 1, Garden City Stakes.
Her graded debut win got her the $90,000 winning purse that boosted her career earnings to $427,393.
Owned by Barbara Hunter, the Kentucky bred ran her second race of the new season with the first one being an allowance race on 8th January at Tampa Bay in which she was positioned second. The race that was staged over 1 1/8 miles was won by Speak Easy Gal while the one finishing third behind the winner was Martita Sangrita.
Decisions regarding the third start of the year for Snow Top Mountain have not been disclosed as yet but the connections would definitely want to race her soon.
